Thought about buying an underhood air compressor for your Jeep? I did, but I was having
some difficulty deciding which of the 4x4's would get the compressor. I wanted to add air
to each vehicle, but the cost was prohibitive. Then I stumbled onto a solution: ARB.
ARB produces a portable compressor that can be purchased for use with ARB's Air Lockers. It comes
packaged in its own sturdy ABS "tackle box". The ARB compressor
was delivered on a Friday afternoon, and thrown into my Ford F350 tow-vehicle for
the trip home. Early the next day I set out to begin stocking up on a winter's supply of
firewood. After loading a third of the truck with Aspen, I realized I had completely forgotten
to air up the rear tires. I run my 285/75R16 BFG's at 20 psi while the truck is empty,
but with the added payload in the rear of the truck running such a low inflation pressure
in our tires is asking for serious tire damage. After kicking myself for forgetting to
air up the tires when I had been so careful to bring everything else I'd need for a full day
outing in the woods, I remembered the ARB behind the seat.
I opened up the compressor's storage box and attached the spring-loaded power supply clamps to
one of the batteries and uncoiled the included air hose. Fortunately for me, this compressor
is completely ready to go. It is packaged with a VDO tire pressure gauge, and even includes
fittings for airing up air mattresses and a needle for footballs/volleyballs etc. Another
very nice touch is the clip-on attachment at the end of the air hose. The air hose clips to
the valve stem of the tire allowing you to walk away (or at least stand up) while inflating. It's nice not to
have stiff kness after squatting to air up. In about 10 minutes, both rear tires
were inflated to 50 psi and I was back on my way.
If you find yourself in the same situation, and have too many vehicles and not enough cash to
purchase a compressor for each of them, check out the ARB portable unit. It has already been proven
to be much more durable than your average auto-parts store compressor, and it airs-up tires
much quicker.
