Bonarue - "Wherever you go, we'll stand behind you"
As you can imagine, I have the option of being pretty picky about what products go onto my personal Jeeps.
I had searched for months for a rear tire carrier for our 1999 Grand Cherokee Project, but every one I found came up short one way or another...until I stumbled upon Bonarue Manufacturing at the 2001 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Unlike other units, the exceptionally well-designed Bonarue II Tire Carrier System is very quiet AND retains the ability to use your tow hitch - that's right, you can still tow with the tire carrier in place*!
What makes the Bonarue II Tire Carrier System so quiet is their exclusive "WFM", or Wobble-Free Mount, that bolts to the carrier and holds it still against the vehicle's receiver. It not only works, it works very well. And, other than the familiar - and welcome! - sight of a large mud tire in my rearview mirror, I don't notice the new carrier at all.
Opening the rear hatch simply requires popping the lock-pin (this prevents accidental opening while off-roading, etc.) and operating a spring-loaded lever that releases the tire toward the rear of the vehicle. I haven't had to do this much, since the rear window of my WJ still opens normally without moving the tire.
Features:
- Fits all 2" receiver hitches
- Powder-coated hitches
- Superior quality
- Simple installation
- Adaptable to 5, 6, and 8 lug wheel patterns
- Exclusive WFM plate prevents carrier play
- Built-in illuminated license plate holder
- Spring-loaded operation
- Hitch-pin lock included
What We Really Think
It's nice to see that someone took the time to build a good removable tire carrier that will work on virtually any Jeep (or other SUV). Shipping weight is only 51 Lbs!
Absolutely NO holes to drill!! Take it off at any time, or even move it from Jeep to Jeep.
Works best with aftermarket wheels; for proper mounting of our factory Grand Cherokee wheel we had to mount it backward, making it stick out a little. Not a complaint, we're just letting you know!
* 16-18" extension of hitch decreases tongue and towing capacities by 1/3
