You have undoubtedly seen Goodyear MT/R tires running around by now, but are they any good? I sure think so! They are even good enough to come standard on the new Jeep Rubicon!
I’ve been running 31” Goodyear MT/R tires on my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee for over a year now, and I’ve been testing them on everything from the sand and sharp rocks of the California deserts,
to the slick rocks of Moab, to the snow and mud of Washington mountains, and these tires stick to everything I have put them through. At first, I was concerned about ride quality and noise levels, putting aggressive mud tires onto a Grand Cherokee WJ and all, but it turns out that the engineers at
Goodyear Tires really know what they are doing! Even after many thousands of miles without balancing or rotation*, they are still plenty quiet for us Grand Cherokee owners, yet aggressive enough to use on even the most hardcore of Jeeps. They have also worn surprising little for mud tires that have some many miles on them without being rotated, and still look almost new, despite being our daily driver.
Unlike most other mud tires, Goodyear MT/R’s offer three-ply sidewall protection (affectionately called Durawall), and we have yet to puncture one - that means a lot when
you are wheeling a day’s (or more!) walk from the highway and you are carrying only one spare with your Jeep. And, even though the sidewalls have this extra ply, they still flex very well when aired-down, allowing them to wrap around rocks and other obstacles while off-road, offering extreme traction when needed.
The Goodyear MT/R’s aggressive tread also self-cleans better than most of the other mud tires that we have tested, making them excellent for use in mud and snow.
